Washington Junior High School

Washington Junior High School
The George Washington Junior High School, 1490 North Raymond Avenue, was erected on top of Monk Hill, so called because it was first owned by Henry G. Monks.  The school was dedicated on February 21, 1924, when it opened with five hundred students and twenty-five faculty members.  The Parent-Teacher Association was organized immediately and has continued to function as a vital force in the community.  Following the earthquake in 1933, the school campus was condemned as unsafe; so approximately 600 pupils were sent to Eliot and Marshall Junior High Schools, and the remainder were housed in canvas tents erected beneath the pepper trees on the physical education grounds.  These tents and the gymnasium were used as classrooms for two and a half years, and an old building was moved to the present site of the elementary cafeteria building and served as the school offices.  At the time no cafeteria services ere available other than from the canteen  The main building, exclusive the north wing, was reinforced and the student population was moved back into the building in October 1935.  The north wing has remained closed for classes but served from June 1944 to January 1949 as the headquarters of the Pasadena Recreation Department.  Secondary school bonds were passed in June 1954, making it possible to tear down and rebuild the north wing, which will provided ten new classrooms, an art craft room, a graphic arts room, a power shop and a choral room.  In 1955, the junior high school continued to share cafeteria facilities with the elementary school.  The school has produced many outstanding community leaders and has the distinction of having organized the first junior high school Alumni Association, which was started at the time of the school's Silver Anniversary in 1949.  Four principals have served the school up to 1955:  E. E. McCullough, 1924-27; Charles H. Peterson, 1927-28; Nellie G. Clarke, 1928-42; and Martha Pauline Handy, 1942 to
