Dr. Ezra and Jeanne Carr
Relaxing among the numerous exotic
plants and trees on
the grounds of their home, "Carmelita."
Dr. Carr was a noted physician, chemist
and geologist.
He was a professor at the University of Wisconsin before
accepting a position at the University of California at
Berkley in 1869. In 1875, Dr. Carr became Superintendent
of Public Instruction for the State of California.
Jeanne Carr was an expert in horticulture and responsible
for planning and planting the famous gardens where she was
a gracious hostess to such famous people as John Muir and
author Helen Hunt Jackson.

"Carmelita"
The cultural center of early Pasadena, this forty-two-acre plot
was located on the north-east corner of Colorado Street and
Orange Grove Avenue, on the east bank of the Arroyo Secco.
