CLIFF ANDERSON

After WWI, my folks moved to Pasadena where I went to Jefferson Elementary with Mark Helbling.  Then to Altadena in 1947 where I first connected in the 3rd grade with future Muir classmates Toby Sutton, Bob Marsh, Dave Remine, Ed Kinney, David McGillvary, Jack Stiver, George Bertonneau and Doug Cox, among others, as we all went through Altadena Elementary and Eliot JHS before Muir.  The morning after graduation in 1956, neighbor/classmate Mike Shanahan and I drove to Grantís Pass to work the summer in his grandfatherís lumber factory.  After which I flew directly to begin college at Dartmouth.  Then, since my family moved to the east San Francisco Bay area the next year, I was never able to personally reconnect with Muir classmates.

ROTC and USMC commissioned service got me aboard the battleship USS Wisconsin, back and forth through the Panama Canal twice, the second time for the Cuban Missile Crisis in a troop ship, and aboard an aircraft carrier (USS Hancock) into the Western Pacific, pre Viet Nam.  Marine Corps for 6 years, but before being consumed in Viet Nam, the FBI recruited me, where I spent the next 22 years, mostly here in New Orleans.  I worked and supervised civil rights violations, among others.  I retired in 1988, but have been just as busy since then, doing legal investigation for attorneys and suitability inquiries for federal agencies (somewhat like Mike Jordan indicates in his bio).  (Lots of Bureau stories about Hoover, etc., which Iíll save for future encounters and bull sessions.)

My wife, Nancy, and I have two children, a labor union attorney in Boston and a psychology professor in San Antonio.
As grandparents, weíre learning what we never knew as parents.  And like all of us in this generation, weíre coping with health and death issues of friends and family members.

Current obsessions and interests include bimetallic coins, the Great White Fleet, Confederate Marine Corps, Admiral Horatio Nelson, artist Alfred Bierstadt, Robert Frost, New England muralist and inventor Rufus Porter, and Spike Jones.

We travel when we can and our best experiences have been in Innsbruck, Austria, where Nancy has been periodically teaching summer school through a local university here.  Weíve found that area to be at least the geographic center of Europe, so close to Switzerland, France, Italy, Germany, and the irresistible charms of the Alps, Munich, Vienna, Florence and Venice.  So of course I have become my wifeís tax deductible ìacademic and research assistantî.

I was able to catch the Class of 56ís 25th reunion in 1981, but not any since then.  So I welcome any notes from old classmates.  But, since New Orleans is the original ìpartyî town (the city likes to think we invented tourism ñ like Mardi Gras and Jazz Fest), consider coming here for vacation (or whatever) and calling me for at least a drink.
Best regards to all.
