David Forsythe
After graduation I attended PCC until October of 1956 at which time I joined
the army, going through boot camp at Fort Ord, California, then further training for the Army Security Agency in Fort Devens, Massachusetts. From
Fort Devens I was stationed at Clark Air Base in the Philippine Islands.
Upon leaving the army in 1959 I returned to PCC, then UCLA. In my senior year I was recruited by the CIA and on June 15th, after graduation, I
married, and my new wife and I traveled to Washington D.C. After a few weeks in Washington I was assigned to Miami Beach for training for 9 months, at
which time I learned I was to be assigned as a Foreign Field Officer to Algiers, Algeria. While in Algeria my first child, Stephanie, was born.
After two years in Algeria we went to Kathmandu, Nepal, where we stayed for
a year. At that point in time, for various reasons, we decided to quit the CIA and return to Pasadena. Since my academic field had been Psychology,
there was not much at that time (1967) in the way of work, so I again went to PCC to pick up a few courses then transferred to California State
University at LA with a major in Business Administration with an option in computer information systems. In 1969 my second daughter, Navina, was born,
and shortly thereafter I was hired by the Treasury Intelligence Division in Los Angeles (sometime later the name was changed to Treasury Criminal
Investigation Division. I held various positions in the Los Angeles division until 1975 when I was transferred to San Francisco, the regional headquarters as a regional analyst. During my stay in San Francisco my final
two children were born (David Scott and Reina Lianne).
In 1980 I was sent to Salt Lake City to take over as Chief of the Utah Division until I retired in
1990 at the age of 53 (retirement was mandatory at age 55). We continue to reside in Salt Lake City although I still consider Pasadena my home.

Life has been good -- uneventful in
comparison to some, but definitely good. After
leaving Muir, I attended Pasadena City College for one year.
The following year, Lee Goudeau and I married and I joined the Bank of
America in 1959 when BankAmericard was introduced. We were located in the old Sears department store on Colorado
ñ actually started out in the nursery section behind the parking lot.
I took the secretarial position with the thought of working a couple of
years until I had a child. The
marriage lasted about 5 years, the employment at Bank of America 42 years and I
have no children. I skipped the
mother role but I have six wonderful grandchildren!
My
career at the Bank of America has been varied and truly satisfying in spite of the
mergers, buyouts and staff cutbacks. I
served as secretary to the BankAmericard division manager for about 5 years.
He wanted me to work in the Los Angeles headquarters but I was reluctant
to travel downtown. But then, along came the civil rights movement and the bank
was scrambling to find a qualified minority secretary for the Executive Dept.
They needed someone of color and I had that plus the skills.
Of course, they didnít tell me what they were doing but it was very
apparent. I accepted the challenge.
By this time, I was dating someone who lived in Los Angeles so I was more
easily motivated to commute. We
continued dating nearly 20 years and have been married 20 years ñ in other
words, weíve had a lifetime together.
During my 42-year
career, Iíve continued my education by taking courses at UCLA which prepared
me for numerous positions in the bank. I
served as secretary to two chairmen of the board for about 5 years and then went
into Public Relations. I stayed in
PR for 14 years where my positions included managing the bankís Achievement
Awards program for high school students in Southern California, serving as a
community relations officer and finally as a public information officer. In 1987, my career brought me back to Pasadena, to the same
Sears building, this time to the Student Loans department where I became a
marketing officer. We relocated to
Brea in 1996 and just recently moved our operation to Los Angeles. Weíre
called Student Banking now, encompassing loans, checking and student credit
cards, but my focus is primarily on student loans. In my current position I
oversee the content on our Student Banking Web site.
Take a look. You may have a grandchild heading off to college next fall
who is in need of helpful financial aid information. There is a newsletter, the
College Connection, and a library containing information that can be downloaded.

After 42 years one would think itís time to retire, do something different. Iíve given it serious consideration but am not ready yet. I have plenty of vacation time available for R&R -- Maui, Hawaii being a favorite destination. Having had a relative on the island made the trips so much more pleasurable over the years and I quickly became addicted to the clean air, the red dirt and the Aloha spirit. Retirement years could find me residing on Maui on at least a part-time basis.

Dear Classmates of '56:
I can't quite believe were all this old (and still functioning). Post
Muir, I attended UC Davis for three years, shuttled back and forth by Fred
Wilmshurst in his overloaded VW. What happened to Fred? Jack Burke
pinned me at UCD. Seeing that he died was terribly discouraging news.
Worked United Airlines as a reservation agent for four years and
decided there must be more to life, so I ski bummed for eight years at Alta, UT,
Whistler, B.C. and Aspen, Colorado. The
summers were fleshed out working a dude ranch in Jackson Hole.
Finally grew up and married a fellow ski bum in my mid thirties, produced
one son, in Alaska as it happened. I
was working as a slime-er in a fish processing plant while my husband crewed on
a salmon seine boat. In ë74 we
moved back to Canada where Rod built his own salmon fishing boat after the Alta
season finished and we were mad enough to build a house in Nanaimo, in mid
Vancouver Island, B.C.
The rest is boring-snoring; life apace married with children,
summers spent fishing the inside passage between Vancouver Island and the
mainland or up the Canadian fjords, beautiful country.
My dad died in í86 leaving his Escondido citrus property to me,
totally unexpected, so we trooped down to give it a go.
I will not go into the economics of farming, but suffice to say, itís a
bust. So, saying, you are up to speed on the life and times of J. Reed, now
Roberts.
Should we get together in í06?
Will we still be around, anthrax and Ossie bin Laden aside?
Weíve made it this far.
Cheers! Hereís
looking up your address, to quote the Brits.
